What E1 means on a Electrolux freezer
The E1 error code on an Electrolux freezer indicates a thermistor fault. The thermistor is a temperature-sensing resistor that continuously monitors the internal cabinet temperature and relays that data to the control board. When the control board detects that the thermistor signal is outside its expected parameters, either through an open circuit, a short circuit, or a resistance value that falls outside the acceptable range, it flags the E1 code and triggers an audible alarm.
When E1 is active, the freezer enters Fail Safe Mode. In this mode, the compressor runs continuously without cycling, because the control board can no longer use thermistor feedback to regulate the cooling cycle normally. While this protects food from thawing in the short term, continuous compressor operation without temperature regulation can cause excessive frost buildup, elevated energy consumption, and potential long-term strain on the compressor and sealed system components.
Diagnosis begins by entering the service diagnostic mode and pressing the mute sounds key to silence the audible alarm. From there, technicians can confirm the thermistor fault and check whether it is caused by a failed sensor, a wiring harness problem such as a broken or corroded connector, or a defective control board that is misreading a valid thermistor signal. Resistance testing of the thermistor across its connector terminals is essential for differentiating between a sensor failure and a wiring or board issue.

Common causes of E1
- 01
Failed thermistor sensor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself has failed, either open or shorted, causing it to send a signal outside the acceptable range to the control board. Resistance testing at the sensor terminals will confirm this if the reading is far outside the expected value for the current cabinet temperature.
- 02
Damaged or disconnected wiring harness
Wiring / connectionThe wiring between the thermistor and the control board may have a broken wire, a loose connector, or corrosion at the terminals. A visual inspection of the harness and connector, combined with continuity testing, will identify this issue.
- 03
Corroded or loose thermistor connector
Wiring / connectionMoisture inside a freezer cabinet can corrode the thermistor connector pins over time, creating high resistance or intermittent loss of signal. Cleaning or replacing the connector may resolve the fault without replacing the sensor.
- 04
Defective control board
Part replacementIf the thermistor and all wiring check out correctly, the control board itself may be misinterpreting the sensor signal or has failed internally. This is typically diagnosed by confirming the thermistor reads correctly at the board's input terminals while the E1 code persists.
- 05
Thermistor displaced from its mounting location
Wiring / connectionIf the thermistor probe has come loose from its clip or mounting bracket, it may be sensing an unintended area of the cabinet and reporting an out-of-range temperature. Inspect the sensor position and reseat it if needed.
