What #131 means on a Fisher & Paykel washer
Error code #131 on a Fisher & Paykel washer indicates a Rotor Position Sensor (RPS) fault. The Motor Control Module has received a signal from the Rotor Position Sensor that falls outside acceptable parameters, either erratic, absent, or otherwise invalid. The Rotor Position Sensor is a hall-effect type sensor mounted near the motor rotor that continuously monitors rotor position and speed, feeding that data back to the Motor Control Module so it can precisely time and control motor commutation during the wash and spin cycles.
When the Motor Control Module cannot trust the incoming RPS signal, it triggers error #131 and typically halts motor operation to prevent damage from uncontrolled or out-of-sequence motor firing. The most frequent cause is a wiring or connection problem in the harness that runs between the Rotor Position Sensor and the Motor Control Module. Connector pins in this harness can corrode, back out of their housings, or sustain damage from vibration over time, producing the intermittent or absent signal that triggers the fault.
If the harness and connectors check out visually and electrically, the Rotor Position Sensor itself may have failed internally. The sensor can also produce fault signals if the air gap between the sensor and the rotor magnets is incorrect, which can happen if the rotor has shifted or if the sensor mounting has loosened. The Motor Control Module is a less likely but possible cause if all wiring and sensor components test correctly.

Common causes of #131
- 01
Loose or corroded harness connector
Wiring / connectionThe wiring harness connecting the Rotor Position Sensor to the Motor Control Module may have a loose, corroded, or damaged connector pin. Inspect the connector at both ends for corrosion, bent pins, or terminals that have backed out of the housing.
- 02
Damaged wiring harness
Part replacementVibration during spin cycles can wear through wire insulation or cause internal wire breaks, producing an intermittent or absent signal. Flex the harness along its length while checking for continuity to identify breaks.
- 03
Faulty Rotor Position Sensor
Part replacementThe Rotor Position Sensor itself may have failed internally and is sending an invalid signal to the Motor Control Module. If the harness and connectors are in good condition, the sensor is the next component to replace.
- 04
Incorrect sensor-to-rotor air gap
Wiring / connectionIf the rotor has shifted on the shaft or the sensor mounting has loosened, the air gap between the sensor and the rotor magnets may be out of specification, causing unreliable signal output. Check that the sensor is firmly mounted and the rotor is properly seated.
- 05
Faulty Motor Control Module
Part replacementIf the harness, connectors, and Rotor Position Sensor all test correctly, the Motor Control Module may be misreading or failing to process the incoming sensor signal. This is the least common cause and should be diagnosed only after other components are ruled out.
