GE Dishwasher Error Code C2

The C2 error code on a GE dishwasher indicates that the pump-out cycle has exceeded 400 seconds without successfully draining the tub. Under normal operation, the drain pump clears standing water within a much shorter window. When the control detects that the pump has been running beyond the 400-second threshold, it executes a specific diagnostic routine: it shuts the pump off for 5 seconds, then restarts it while simultaneously energizing the drain solenoid. This two-step restart is designed to distinguish between two distinct failure modes, either a drain valve stuck in an open position or a drain system that is genuinely and physically blocked.

The drain system in these dishwashers involves several components that can each contribute to a C2 fault. The filter screen and filter chamber beneath the lower spray arm are common culprits, as accumulated food soil can restrict flow to the point where the pump cannot move water fast enough to satisfy the control board. A check valve located inside the filter chamber uses a gasket to prevent backflow, and if that gasket becomes swollen from heat or chemical exposure, it can block the drain path rather than seal against it. The inlet and sump area can also accumulate debris that reduces drainage efficiency over time.

External plumbing conditions are equally important to evaluate. A clogged air gap on the sink deck will back-pressure the drain hose and prevent the dishwasher from expelling water regardless of pump performance. A full or clogged garbage disposer has the same effect, since the dishwasher drain line typically connects at the disposer inlet. If those external factors are ruled out, attention should shift to the drain solenoid and motor mechanism, as a failed solenoid may prevent the drain valve from operating correctly, and a mechanically degraded pump motor may lack the torque to clear even a partially obstructed drain path.
