GE Dishwasher Error Code F11

The F11 error code on a GE dishwasher indicates that the control board has detected a temperature sensor reading that is abnormally low. The temperature sensor in GE dishwashers is a thermistor, a resistive component whose electrical resistance changes predictably with temperature. When the thermistor sends a signal to the main control board that falls outside the expected low-end threshold, the board interprets this as a fault and triggers the F11 code. This can occur either because the water temperature is genuinely too low, or more commonly, because the thermistor itself is malfunctioning.

The thermistor is typically located in the sump area or on the heating element assembly, where it monitors wash and rinse water temperatures to ensure proper cleaning and sanitizing cycles. A faulty thermistor can present in several ways: it may develop an open circuit, which causes the resistance to spike and the corresponding voltage signal to drop to near zero, or it may have a short circuit that sends an erroneously low temperature reading to the control board. Wiring harness issues, including corroded connectors or damaged leads between the thermistor and the main board, can also produce the same low-reading symptom.

Diagnosis should begin with the thermistor itself. Disconnect power to the dishwasher, locate the thermistor, disconnect its harness, and measure its resistance with a multimeter. A reading that is open, shorted, or far outside the expected range for ambient temperature confirms a failed thermistor. If the thermistor tests within spec, inspect all wiring and connectors in the circuit for damage or corrosion. If both the thermistor and wiring check out, the main control board is likely misinterpreting the sensor signal and will need replacement.
