What SPEED means on a GE dishwasher
The SPEED error code on a GE dishwasher indicates that the control has detected water flowing through the inlet path while the inlet valve is in its closed (off) state. The flow meter, which monitors water entering the tub, is registering movement that should not be occurring. When this condition is detected, the dishwasher immediately halts any active wash cycle and activates the drain pump to remove the unauthorized water accumulation. This is a protective response to prevent flooding or overflow.
The inlet valve is an electrically operated solenoid valve. When the valve is commanded off, the solenoid de-energizes and a spring-loaded mechanism is supposed to seat a rubber diaphragm or plunger to stop water flow. If the valve fails to close fully, water bypasses the seal and continues entering the tub. The flow meter detects this movement and triggers the SPEED code. A failed valve seat, deteriorated diaphragm, debris lodged in the valve body, or a faulty solenoid that holds the plunger partially open are all mechanical pathways to this fault.
The diagnostic approach requires inspecting both the inlet valve and the flow meter together. The valve should be checked for physical debris, mineral scale buildup, and diaphragm condition. The flow meter should be verified to confirm it is not generating false readings due to a stuck or damaged paddle. Because the drain pump activates automatically, water is being removed, but the underlying leak path must be identified and corrected before the appliance can return to normal operation.

Common causes of SPEED
- 01
Faulty inlet valve not seating properly
Part replacementThe solenoid valve's internal diaphragm or plunger may be worn, warped, or damaged, preventing a complete seal when the valve is commanded closed. Inspect the valve body for visible debris or worn rubber components.
- 02
Debris or mineral scale in the inlet valve
Wiring / connectionHard water deposits or sediment can lodge in the valve seat and hold the diaphragm slightly open, allowing a slow trickle of water to pass through. Cleaning or replacing the valve is required.
- 03
Stuck or malfunctioning flow meter
Part replacementThe flow meter uses a spinning paddle to detect water movement. If the paddle is stuck in a position that registers flow, the control will log a false SPEED code even if the inlet valve is functioning correctly.
- 04
Failed inlet valve solenoid
Part replacementIf the solenoid coil inside the valve is electrically shorted or physically damaged, it may hold the valve mechanism in a partially open state. Check solenoid resistance and compare to expected specifications.
- 05
Wiring or connection issue at the inlet valve
Wiring / connectionA short or stray voltage on the wiring harness connected to the inlet valve solenoid can cause the valve to behave unexpectedly. Inspect the harness terminals and connector for corrosion, pinching, or damage.
