What Start LED means on a GE dishwasher
The Start LED error on a GE dishwasher indicates a communications failure between the user interface (UI) control board and the machine control board. These two boards exchange data continuously during operation. When the machine control stops receiving valid signals from the UI board, or vice versa, the dishwasher flags this condition by illuminating the Start LED. This typically points to a wiring harness issue, a failed connection at one of the board connectors, or a defective UI board.
For homeowners, this means the control panel and the main brain of the dishwasher are no longer talking to each other. The UI board is the panel you touch to select cycles and press Start. The machine control board sits inside the dishwasher and actually runs the motor, pump, and valves. When they lose communication, the dishwasher cannot operate safely or correctly, so it stops and alerts you with the Start LED indicator.
Before replacing any parts, check that all wire harness connectors between the two boards are fully seated and undamaged. Corrosion, a loose connector pin, or a pinched wire can interrupt the signal. If the connections look good, the UI board is the most likely failed component and should be replaced first.

Common causes of Start LED
- 01
Loose or disconnected wiring harness between UI and machine control boards
Wiring / connectionThe ribbon or wire harness connecting the UI board to the machine control board can loosen over time from vibration or during prior service. A loose connector interrupts the data signal and immediately triggers the communications failure.
- 02
Corroded or damaged connector pins on the harness
Part replacementMoisture inside the door panel can corrode the connector pins on either end of the harness, creating high resistance or an open circuit in the communication line. Corroded pins may need the harness replaced to restore a clean connection.
- 03
Failed user interface (UI) control board
Part replacementThe UI board itself can fail due to a power surge, moisture intrusion, or component wear. A failed UI board cannot transmit or receive communication signals, triggering this error even when all wiring is intact.
- 04
Failed machine control board
Part replacementLess commonly, the machine control board loses the ability to communicate on its end of the connection. If replacing the UI board and verifying all wiring does not resolve the error, the machine control board is the next suspect.
