GE Oven Error Code PROB

PROB on a GE oven means the oven has detected a temperature probe plugged into the probe receptacle while you are attempting to start a self-clean cycle. The oven displays this alert to prevent the probe from being exposed to the extreme heat of the self-clean process, which would permanently damage it. It is not a sign of a malfunction and requires no repairs, only removal of the probe before proceeding.

The PROB alert itself is a safety feature, not a hazard. It exists specifically to prevent the temperature probe from being damaged or causing issues inside the oven during a self-clean cycle, where temperatures can reach extremely high levels. As long as you remove the probe before running the self-clean cycle, there is no safety risk involved.

In the vast majority of cases, there is no cost at all since the fix simply involves removing the temperature probe before starting the self-clean cycle. If the PROB alert appears without any probe visibly connected and is traced to a damaged probe sending a false signal, replacing a GE oven temperature probe typically costs in the range of $20 to $60 for the part, with additional labor costs if a technician is needed.

Press the CLEAR/OFF pad to cancel the current cycle setup, then unlatch the oven door and locate the temperature probe receptacle inside the oven. Unplug the probe completely from the receptacle and store it outside the oven. Once the probe is removed, restart the self-clean cycle setup from the beginning and the PROB alert should not reappear.

Pressing CLEAR/OFF will cancel the cycle setup and clear the display, but if you restart the self-clean cycle without removing the probe, PROB will appear again. The code will only stay cleared when the probe is physically unplugged from the receptacle before the self-clean cycle is configured and started.
