GE Range Error Code ERR

The ERR code on a GE range indicates that the self-clean cycle was set while one or more surface burners were still turned on. The control system displays this code alongside the message 'TURN SURFACE BURNERS OFF' as a safety interlock. It is not a component failure, and no parts are needed in most cases. Turning off all surface burners and restarting the self-clean cycle will resolve it.

The ERR code itself is a protective interlock, meaning the range is working as intended to prevent unsafe operation. The oven self-clean cycle will not start until the condition is resolved. You can still use the surface burners normally, but the oven self-clean function will remain blocked until all burners are turned off.

In most cases there is no repair cost at all, since the ERR code is a user-condition alert rather than a component failure. If a faulty infinite burner switch is identified as the cause, replacement switches typically cost between 20 and 60 dollars for parts. If the control board is at fault, board replacement can range from 150 to 400 dollars or more depending on the model, plus any applicable labor costs.

Turn off every surface burner completely, making sure each knob is clicked firmly into the OFF position. Once all burners are off, restart the self-clean cycle through the oven control panel. If the ERR code continues to appear even with all burners confirmed off, a faulty burner switch or control board may need to be inspected by a technician.

A basic reset alone will not permanently clear the ERR code if the underlying condition, a surface burner still being on, has not been addressed. The code will reappear any time self-clean is initiated with an active burner. Turn off all surface burners first, and then the self-clean cycle can be set without triggering the ERR code again.
