GE Range Error Code F020

F020 indicates a communication failure between the oven user interface board and the cooktop user interface board. These two boards must continuously exchange signals to operate the range correctly. When that communication is lost or interrupted, the range displays F020. The fault can stem from a temporary glitch, a loose wiring connection, or a failed control board.

It is generally not recommended to continue using the range while F020 is active. A communication failure between the two control boards can cause unpredictable behavior in oven or cooktop functions. Power the unit down and complete the reset procedure before attempting to use it again. If the error persists, avoid use until the underlying cause is repaired.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If the fix is simply reseating a loose wiring harness connector, costs are minimal. Replacing a wiring harness typically runs in the range of $20 to $80 for the part. A replacement user interface board, oven or cooktop side, generally costs between $100 and $300 or more depending on the model, plus labor if a technician is hired.

A power reset clears F020 if the cause was a temporary communication disruption rather than a hardware failure. Disconnect power at the outlet or circuit breaker, wait at least 30 seconds, and restore power. If F020 returns shortly after, the issue is a physical problem with the wiring or one of the control boards and will need further diagnosis.

Start by disconnecting power for 30 seconds and reapplying it to see if the error clears. If it returns, inspect the wiring harness connecting the oven and cooktop user interface boards for loose connectors, pinched wires, or visible damage. If the harness looks intact and connections are secure, the next step is testing or replacing one of the two user interface boards, starting with whichever board shows signs of damage or is more accessible for diagnosis.
