GE Range Error Code F029

The F029 error code on a GE range indicates a communication failure between two internal microcontrollers located within the oven's user interface assembly. Specifically, the main user interface microcontroller is unable to initiate communication with the touch microcontroller, which handles capacitive or resistive touch input from the control panel. These two processors rely on an internal data bus or serial communication protocol to coordinate user input with oven control functions. When this handshake or initialization sequence fails at startup or during operation, the control system flags F029 and may lock out some or all oven functions.

This type of fault is most commonly caused by a transient electrical glitch, a loose or damaged ribbon cable connection between the control board and the touchpad, or an internal failure within the user interface board assembly itself. Because both microcontrollers are often integrated onto the same control board or connected via a short flex cable, physical damage, moisture ingress, or manufacturing defects can interrupt the communication path. Power surges or brownouts can also corrupt the initialization sequence without permanently damaging components.

The first diagnostic step is a hard reset: disconnect power to the range at the breaker or by unplugging, wait a full 30 seconds to allow capacitors to discharge and microcontrollers to reset, then reapply power. If the error clears and does not return, the cause was likely a temporary communication fault. If F029 returns immediately or after a short period of use, further physical inspection of the control panel wiring and component replacement will be necessary.
