GE Range Error Code FD

Fd means the Electronic Range Control has detected a short circuit in the meat probe circuit. The board is seeing an abnormally low resistance on the probe input lines, which indicates a shorted condition somewhere between the probe receptacle and the ERC. The fault can originate in the probe itself, the receptacle, the wiring harness, or the J4 connector at the control board.

Basic baking and broiling functions may still operate, but you should not attempt to use the meat probe feature while Fd is active, as the control board cannot accurately read probe temperatures in this state. Using the probe under a shorted circuit condition could result in incorrect temperature data and improperly cooked food. Resolve the fault before relying on any probe-based cooking mode.

When Fd appears without the probe inserted, the short is not in the probe itself but somewhere in the fixed wiring or components. The most likely causes are a contaminated or damaged probe receptacle with bridged contacts, a pinched wiring harness between the receptacle and the ERC, or the J4 plug being reversed or loose at the control board. Work through each of these in order before considering an ERC replacement.

Start by removing the meat probe if it is plugged in, then power cycle the range. If the code clears, test the probe separately or replace it. If Fd returns without the probe inserted, inspect the probe receptacle in the oven wall for debris or bent pins, then check that the J4 plug is fully seated and correctly oriented at the ERC. If the receptacle and connector check out, the wiring harness between them needs to be traced for any pinched or damaged sections.

If the meat probe itself is shorted, a replacement GE-compatible probe typically costs between $20 and $50 and is a simple DIY swap. Cleaning or reseating the J4 connector costs nothing. If the wiring harness is damaged and needs replacement, parts run $30 to $80, but routing the new harness inside the range can be time-consuming and may warrant a service call.
