What FD means on a GE range
The Fd error code indicates the ERC (Electronic Range Control) has detected a short circuit in the meat probe circuit. This is triggered when the control board reads an abnormally low resistance signal from the probe input, which it interprets as a shorted condition rather than a valid temperature reading. The first diagnostic focus should be the J4 plug orientation and connection at the ERC, followed by inspection of the wiring harness and the probe receptacle itself for damaged insulation, pinched wires, or contact bridging that could create a short.
For homeowners, the meat probe is the small temperature sensor you plug into the side wall of the oven cavity to monitor internal food temperature. When the oven's control board sees a short in that circuit, whether from a damaged probe, a faulty receptacle in the oven wall, or a wiring problem, it displays Fd and typically interrupts normal operation to prevent a false temperature reading from affecting cooking.
In many cases, the fix requires no parts at all. Unplugging the probe and verifying the receptacle has no debris or bent contacts is the first check. If the error clears without the probe inserted, the probe itself is the likely culprit.

Common causes of FD
- 01
Meat probe plugged in during error
Part replacementIf the probe is connected when Fd appears, the probe itself may be shorted internally due to damage, moisture intrusion, or a failed sensing element. Unplugging the probe and checking whether the code clears quickly isolates this as the source.
- 02
Probe receptacle short or contamination
Wiring / connectionGrease, food debris, or a bent contact pin inside the oven wall receptacle can bridge the terminals and create a short circuit even when no probe is inserted. Inspecting and cleaning the receptacle may resolve the fault.
- 03
J4 plug incorrectly oriented or disconnected at ERC
Wiring / connectionThe J4 connector links the probe circuit wiring to the Electronic Range Control. If this plug is reversed or has backed out of its socket, the board can misread the circuit as shorted and trigger the Fd code.
- 04
Damaged wiring harness between receptacle and ERC
Part replacementChafed, pinched, or heat-damaged wire insulation along the harness run from the probe receptacle to the control board can cause the two conductors to contact each other, producing a persistent short that triggers Fd regardless of probe status.
