What 25 means on a GE washer dryer

Error code 25 on a GE washer or dryer indicates a pressure sensor dropout condition. The pressure sensor, sometimes called a water level sensor or pressure switch, monitors the water level inside the drum by detecting air pressure changes transmitted through a small rubber or plastic tube connected between the tub and the sensor. When the control board loses a valid signal from this sensor, it triggers code 25 to prevent the machine from operating with unknown water levels.

The most common physical cause is a problem with the pressure tube itself rather than the sensor. The tube routes from the tub up through the machine's top cover, passing through a rubber grommet. At this grommet location, the tube is especially vulnerable to pinching or kinking, which blocks pressure transmission entirely. Water can also enter and pool inside the tube, preventing accurate air pressure readings. A disconnected tube at either the tub fitting or the sensor port produces the same dropout condition.

If the pressure tube and its routing check out without issues, the pressure sensor itself may have failed. Sensor failure can result from internal diaphragm damage, corroded terminals, or electrical faults within the component. A disconnected or damaged wiring harness between the sensor and the control board can also produce this code, so the full circuit path from tub port to sensor to control board should be inspected before condemning any single component.

Common causes of 25

  1. 01

Pinched pressure tube at top cover grommet

    Wiring / connection

The pressure tube commonly gets kinked or crushed where it passes through the rubber grommet in the top cover. Inspect this point first by removing the top panel and checking for any visible deformation or restriction in the tube.

  2. 02

    Water inside the pressure tube

    Wiring / connection

Water can migrate up into the pressure tube and block the air column the sensor depends on for readings. Disconnect the tube, drain any standing water, blow it clear, and reinstall to see if the code clears.

  3. 03

    Disconnected pressure hose

    Wiring / connection

The pressure tube may have come loose at either the tub port fitting or the sensor port. Trace the full length of the tube and confirm both ends are firmly seated and free of cracks.

  4. 04

    Failed pressure sensor

    Part replacement

The pressure sensor itself can fail due to a ruptured internal diaphragm or corroded electrical contacts. If the tube is intact and properly connected, the sensor should be tested and replaced if it is not responding correctly.

  5. 05

    Damaged or disconnected wiring harness

    Wiring / connection

A loose connector, broken wire, or corroded terminal between the pressure sensor and the control board can interrupt the signal and trigger code 25. Inspect the harness and connector at the sensor for continuity and secure seating.

Frequently asked questions about 25

What does 25 mean on a GE washer, dryer?
Error code 25 on a GE washer or dryer indicates a pressure sensor dropout. The control board is not receiving a valid signal from the pressure sensor, which monitors water levels via a small air-filled tube connected to the tub. The cause is most often a pinched, blocked, or water-filled pressure tube rather than a failed sensor.
How do I fix error code 25 on a GE appliance?
Start by inspecting the pressure tube where it passes through the top cover grommet, as this is the most common point of pinching. Also check both ends of the tube for secure connections and look for water inside the tube. If the tube is clear and properly connected, the pressure sensor or its wiring harness may need testing and possible replacement.
Will resetting the machine clear error code 25?
A reset may temporarily clear the display, but code 25 will return if the underlying cause is not addressed. The pressure sensor dropout condition must be resolved by correcting the tube routing, clearing any blockage or water, or replacing the sensor before the appliance will operate normally.
Is it safe to keep using a GE appliance showing error code 25?
It is not recommended to continue running the appliance while code 25 is active. Without a functioning pressure sensor signal, the control board cannot accurately monitor water levels, which could lead to overfilling or incorrect cycle operation. Addressing the fault before running additional cycles is the safest approach.
How much does it cost to repair error code 25 on a GE washer or dryer?
If the fix is simply clearing a pinched or water-filled tube, there may be no parts cost at all, only the time to inspect and correct the routing. If the pressure sensor has failed and needs replacement, parts and labor combined typically range from around $75 to $200 depending on the model and service rates in your area.
