Goodman heat pump fault code 07 indicates an open run circuit at the compressor. The run winding is one of two primary windings in a single-phase compressor motor, responsible for sustaining motor rotation during normal operation. When the control board detects that current is not flowing through the run winding circuit as expected, it logs this fault and shuts down compressor operation to prevent damage. An open circuit in this context means electrical continuity has been lost somewhere between the control board output and the compressor motor terminals.

The three primary sources of this fault are a failed compressor run winding, improper or incomplete wiring connections, and damaged wiring in the compressor circuit. A compressor with an open run winding has an internal motor failure and will require compressor replacement. Wiring issues can include loose terminals at the compressor contactor, corroded or disconnected spade terminals at the compressor itself, or a broken wire in the harness running to the compressor. The control board reads this condition by monitoring the run circuit and flagging the absence of expected electrical continuity or current draw.

Diagnosing this fault requires isolating whether the open circuit exists in the compressor motor itself or in the external wiring. Using a multimeter, a technician should first verify continuity and resistance across the compressor run winding terminals. A reading of infinite resistance between the run and common terminals confirms an open winding internally. If the winding tests normal, the wiring from the contactor to the compressor terminals should be inspected for damage, loose connections, or corrosion before condemning the compressor.
