When the wash and rinse indicator lights flash quickly together on a Haier washer, the machine has activated its safety switch to prevent the spin cycle from operating. This protection system is designed to detect conditions where spinning would be unsafe, specifically an unbalanced load inside the drum or an unlevel machine. The washer's control board monitors input from the lid switch and the machine's balance state, and when the safety switch triggers, it halts spin operation entirely until the fault condition is corrected.

The most common trigger is an uneven distribution of laundry inside the drum. Heavy items like towels, jeans, or bedding can clump together on one side during the wash or rinse cycle, creating a significant weight imbalance. When the drum attempts to accelerate into the spin phase, this imbalance causes excessive vibration that the safety switch detects and responds to by cutting spin operation.

A secondary but equally important trigger is the physical positioning of the washer itself. If the machine is sitting on an uneven floor or its leveling feet have shifted over time, the machine's own tilt can register as an imbalance condition even with a properly distributed load. The lid switch also plays a role in this sequence: the diagnostic procedure requires opening and closing the lid to reset the safety switch state after the underlying condition has been corrected. If the lid switch is faulty or misaligned, the reset may not register properly even after the load and leveling issues are addressed.
