What FAEC means on a Jenn-Air refrigerator
The FAEC error code on a Jenn-Air refrigerator indicates that the pantry damper is not operating correctly. The pantry damper is a motorized air control component that regulates airflow into the pantry or temperature-controlled drawer section of the refrigerator. When the control board commands the damper to open or close, it expects to see a response confirming movement. If the damper fails to actuate or the control board detects an inconsistency in operation, it triggers the FAEC fault to alert the technician that intervention is needed.
Diagnosing this fault begins with running Test 42, the Pantry Air Damper test sequence. During this test, you should measure 12 to 13 volts DC at the damper connector between the red (RD) and yellow (YL) wires when the control board sends open and close commands. If voltage is present within that range but the damper does not move, the damper motor or gear assembly is the likely failed component. If voltage is absent or outside the 12 to 13 volt window, the wiring harness or the control board itself may be at fault.
Common causes for this error include a seized or burned-out damper motor, damaged wiring between the damper and control board, a faulty connector or corroded terminal at the damper plug, or a defective main control board that is not delivering the correct drive voltage. Ice buildup around the damper assembly can also physically obstruct movement, triggering the fault even when the electrical components are otherwise functional.

Common causes of FAEC
- 01
Failed Pantry Damper Motor
Part replacementThe damper motor or its internal gear assembly has burned out or seized, preventing the damper from opening or closing. Voltage will be present at the RD to YL wires during Test 42 but the damper will not respond mechanically.
- 02
Ice Obstruction at the Damper
Wiring / connectionIce buildup around the damper door can physically block its movement even when the motor and wiring are functional. Inspect the damper housing for frost accumulation and manually defrost the area to check if operation resumes.
- 03
Damaged or Disconnected Wiring Harness
Wiring / connectionA broken wire or loose connector in the harness running between the control board and the damper can interrupt the 12 to 13 volt supply signal. Check the RD and YL wires along their full length and inspect the damper plug for corrosion or pushed-back terminals.
- 04
Corroded or Faulty Damper Connector
Wiring / connectionMoisture inside the refrigerator compartment can corrode the damper wiring connector, causing high resistance or an open circuit. Voltage drop or absence at the connector during Test 42 points to this cause.
- 05
Defective Main Control Board
Part replacementIf Test 42 shows no voltage or incorrect voltage at the damper connector and the wiring checks out clean, the main control board may not be delivering the proper drive signal. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after ruling out the damper and harness.
