What CLn means on a Kenmore oven
The CLn display on a Kenmore oven is not an error code in the traditional sense. It is a status indicator that appears during an active self-clean cycle. When you initiate self-clean, the oven's control board activates a high-heat cleaning mode in which interior temperatures can reach 800 to 900 degrees Fahrenheit. During this time, the door lock motor engages automatically, securing the door latch and preventing the door from being opened. The CLn display remains on the control panel for the entire duration of the cycle.
The door lock mechanism is tied directly to a thermal interlock system. Even after the self-clean cycle ends and the heating element de-energizes, the door will remain locked until the oven cavity cools to a safe temperature. This cooling period typically takes approximately one hour after the cycle concludes. The control board monitors the oven temperature sensor (sometimes called the RTD sensor) throughout this process and only signals the door lock motor to disengage when the interior has cooled sufficiently.
In most cases, CLn appearing on the display simply means the oven is operating exactly as designed. There is no component failure associated with a normal CLn display. If the code persists well beyond the expected cooling period, or if the door remains locked long after the oven has cooled to room temperature, that would warrant further investigation of the door lock assembly or the control board.

Common causes of CLn
- 01
Active self-clean cycle in progress
Wiring / connectionThe most common reason CLn appears is simply that a self-clean cycle was initiated by the user or was already running. The display will clear on its own once the cycle ends and the oven cools.
- 02
Oven still in post-cycle cooldown
Wiring / connectionAfter the self-clean cycle ends, the oven requires roughly one hour to cool to a safe temperature before the door unlocks. CLn or a locked door during this period is expected behavior, not a fault.
- 03
Door lock assembly not releasing after cooldown
Part replacementIf the door remains locked well after the oven has cooled to room temperature, the door lock motor or latch mechanism may be stuck or faulty. This can sometimes be cleared by cycling power to the oven at the breaker.
- 04
Oven temperature sensor reading inaccurately
Part replacementIf the oven temperature sensor is sending an incorrect high-temperature reading to the control board, the board may keep the door locked even after the oven has physically cooled, because it still believes the interior is too hot to unlock safely.
- 05
Control board not advancing past clean cycle
Part replacementA rare cause of a persistent CLn display is a control board that has stalled in the self-clean program. Cutting power at the breaker for several minutes and restoring it can sometimes reset the board and allow normal operation to resume.
