The SAb display on a Kenmore oven is not an error code in the traditional sense. It is a status indicator confirming that the Sabbath Mode feature has been activated on the oven's control board. Sabbath Mode is a deliberate operational setting designed to meet religious observance requirements, specifically allowing the oven to remain on at a steady temperature for extended periods without producing any audible beeps, automatic shutoffs, or display changes that would indicate user interaction. When this mode is active, the control board suppresses its normal feedback functions, which is why the display freezes on SAb and the unit stops responding to temperature prompts or timer alerts.

From a technical standpoint, the oven control board enters a restricted communication state when Sabbath Mode is engaged. Normal oven functions such as automatic shutoff timers, preheat completion tones, and temperature confirmation beeps are all disabled at the firmware level. The oven itself continues to heat and maintain the set temperature, but the control interface behaves as though it is locked. This is intentional behavior programmed into the control board and does not indicate any fault with the heating element, temperature sensor, or wiring.

Canceling SAb mode requires a specific key combination rather than a simple power cycle. Pressing STOP/CLEAR turns the oven off, and then pressing and holding both the COOK TIME and DELAY START buttons simultaneously for at least 3 seconds will exit Sabbath Mode and return the control board to its standard operating state. If the display does not return to normal after this sequence, the control board itself may need further inspection.
