Error code 9-1 means the dishwasher control cannot confirm that the diverter has moved to its correct position. The diverter directs wash water between spray arms, and its position is monitored by a sensor reading CAM rotation. This fault is triggered by connection problems, mechanical binding, an open fuse, or a failed motor or control board drive circuit.

Running the dishwasher with a 9-1 fault active is not recommended. Because the diverter cannot confirm its position, water may not reach all spray arms correctly, resulting in poor cleaning performance. Continued operation could also put additional strain on the diverter motor if a mechanical bind is present.

Resetting the dishwasher may temporarily clear the fault display, but the code will return if the underlying problem is not corrected. The control monitors diverter position during every cycle, so any reset is only a short-term measure. The diverter circuit and mechanical assembly need to be inspected and repaired to permanently resolve the error.

Some causes of a 9-1 error are DIY-friendly, particularly clearing debris from the diverter assembly or reseating corroded wiring connectors. However, testing motor windings, checking fuse continuity, and diagnosing control board faults require a multimeter and comfort working with appliance wiring. If you are not confident working around electrical components after unplugging the unit, a technician is the safer choice.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. Cleaning a diverter obstruction or reseating connectors costs nothing beyond your time. A replacement diverter motor or fuse typically runs in the range of $30 to $80 for parts. If the control board drive circuit has failed, board replacement can cost $150 to $350 or more for parts alone, plus labor if a technician is involved.
