KitchenAid Oven Error Code F17
Meat Probe error
Meat Probe error – value read out of allowed range (<0°C or >120°C) for 30 seconds; checked only if water is in tank (at least minimum level read).
First step from the service manual
If value returns to allowed range for 30 seconds, the failure is erased. Switch OFF all loads; manage cooling and door lock per AM specs.
The complete diagnostic procedure includes additional test steps, resistance specifications, wiring diagram references, and component test points.

What F17 means on a KitchenAid oven
The F17 error code on a KitchenAid oven indicates a meat probe fault, specifically that the probe's temperature reading has fallen outside the acceptable range, either below 0°C or above 120°C, for a continuous period of 30 seconds. This fault is only monitored and triggered when the steam system's water tank contains at least the minimum required water level. The oven's control board continuously reads the resistance signal from the meat probe and converts it to a temperature value. When that value drifts outside the defined window for the full 30-second window, the F17 code is logged and displayed.
The meat probe circuit relies on a thermistor-style sensor that changes resistance relative to temperature. An open circuit, a short to ground, a damaged probe tip, or a faulty probe jack on the oven cavity wall can all force the control board to read an out-of-range value. Similarly, a probe that is not fully seated in the port, or one that has been exposed to excessive heat or moisture damage, can produce erratic resistance readings that fall outside the allowed band.
Importantly, this fault is self-clearing under the right conditions. If the probe's reported value returns to within the allowed range and stays there for 30 seconds, the control board automatically erases the failure. When the code is active, the control responds by switching off all heating loads and managing the cooling fan and door lock according to the appliance's specified shutdown procedure. This means the oven will not resume cooking until the probe fault is resolved or the probe is disconnected if it is not needed for the current cook cycle.

Common causes of F17
- 01
Meat probe not fully seated in the port
Wiring / connectionA probe that is partially inserted into the oven's side wall jack creates a poor electrical connection, causing the control board to read an erratic or out-of-range resistance value. Remove and firmly reseat the probe connector to confirm it clicks securely into place.
- 02
Damaged or faulty meat probe
Part replacementPhysical damage to the probe tip, cable, or connector, including kinks, burns, or corrosion, can cause an open circuit or short that sends an invalid signal to the control board. Inspect the entire probe cable and tip for visible damage and test probe resistance if a meter is available.
- 03
Defective probe jack on the oven cavity wall
Part replacementThe receptacle built into the oven wall can develop bent contacts, corrosion, or a broken internal connection over time. If a known-good probe still triggers F17, the jack itself may need to be tested for continuity and replaced.
- 04
Probe exposed to out-of-range temperatures
Wiring / connectionIf the probe tip was left in direct contact with the oven rack, heating element, or a very cold item below 0°C such as a frozen roast before any thawing, the actual sensed temperature could legitimately fall outside the 0°C to 120°C monitoring window. Reposition the probe correctly within the food mass and restart.
- 05
Control board fault
Part replacementIf the probe, cable, and jack all test correctly but the error persists, the main control board may be misinterpreting the probe's resistance signal due to a failed input circuit. This is the least common cause and typically requires board-level diagnosis or replacement.
