What F/dL means on a KitchenAid washer
The F/dL error code on a KitchenAid washer indicates a door lock failure. Specifically, the control board has attempted to engage the door lock mechanism six consecutive times without receiving a successful lock confirmation signal. The washer's door lock system uses a combination of a motorized or solenoid-driven latch assembly and a lock switch that sends feedback to the main control board. When the board sends the lock command but never receives the expected confirmation, it trips the F/dL fault and halts the cycle to prevent operation with an unsecured door.
The door lock assembly itself is the most common point of failure. This component contains the actuator that physically engages the latch and one or more switch contacts that signal a locked state back to the control board. If the actuator motor burns out, the switch contacts corrode or fail open, or the plastic latch housing cracks or deforms, the unit will mechanically fail to lock or fail to report that it has locked. Physical damage to the door strike or misalignment of the door relative to the latch can also prevent proper engagement.
Wiring between the door lock assembly and the main control board is another area to inspect. A broken wire, corroded connector pin, or loose harness plug can interrupt the feedback signal even if the lock mechanism itself is functional. In less common cases, the main control board may be the source of the fault, either failing to send the correct voltage signal to actuate the lock or misreading the returned signal. Always begin diagnosis at the physical lock mechanism and wiring before suspecting the control board.

Common causes of F/dL
- 01
Faulty door lock assembly
Part replacementThe door lock actuator or internal switch contacts have failed, preventing the latch from engaging or signaling the control board. Inspect the assembly for visible damage, burning, or broken plastic components.
- 02
Broken or removed door lock mechanism
Part replacementThe lock assembly may have been physically broken off the door or removed during a previous repair. Check that the lock unit is fully installed and seated correctly on the door frame.
- 03
Damaged or misaligned door strike
Wiring / connectionIf the door strike or latch catch on the washer cabinet is bent, broken, or out of alignment, the door lock actuator cannot make full contact to complete the lock. Inspect the strike plate area for deformation or obstruction.
- 04
Wiring harness problem
Wiring / connectionA broken wire, corroded connector pin, or loose plug between the door lock assembly and the main control board can interrupt the lock confirmation signal. Check connectors at both ends of the door lock harness for corrosion, looseness, or broken wires.
- 05
Failed main control board
Part replacementIf the lock assembly and wiring check out correctly, the main control board may not be sending the proper actuation signal or may be misreading the lock feedback. This is the least common cause and should only be suspected after all other components have been ruled out.
