Error code 3 on a Lennox air conditioner means the control board is detecting an unsteady or intermittent input signal from the room thermostat. Instead of receiving a clean, consistent call for operation, the board sees a signal that is cutting in and out. This is most commonly caused by a loose wire connection at the thermostat terminal block.

Error code 3 is not a safety-critical fault in the same category as a refrigerant or electrical hazard, but it does prevent the system from operating reliably. If the thermostat signal is intermittent, the unit may short-cycle, fail to cool properly, or not respond to temperature calls at all. Addressing the loose connection promptly avoids unnecessary wear on other components.

Resetting the system by cycling power may temporarily clear the fault display, but the code will return if the underlying loose or damaged connection is not corrected. A reset alone does not fix the physical wiring problem causing the intermittent signal. The thermostat and control board wiring connections need to be physically inspected and secured before the fault will stay cleared.

Start by removing the thermostat from its wallplate and inspecting every low-voltage wire connection at the terminal block. Tighten any loose terminal screws and ensure each wire end is fully inserted and clamped. Also check the corresponding terminals on the control board inside the air handler. After reseating all connections, restore power and monitor whether the code clears.
