Error code 101 means the air handler has lost communication with the rest of the system over the RSBus network. The RSBus connects the thermostat, indoor unit, and outdoor unit so they can share control signals and operational data. When this communication link is broken, the system cannot function normally and displays code 101. The fault is most often caused by wiring problems or electrical interference near the system.

Code 101 itself is a communication fault, not a direct safety hazard like a refrigerant leak or carbon monoxide issue. However, one underlying cause is improper mixing of high-voltage and low-voltage wiring, which can be a fire or shock hazard if the wiring installation is genuinely incorrect. It is important to have a technician inspect the wiring to confirm the installation is safe.

Repair costs vary depending on the cause. If the fault is a loose connection or a wiring correction, you may only pay a diagnostic service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $200 depending on your region.
