Lennox HVAC Error Code 401

Error code 401 means the secondary (24VAC) control voltage in the air-handler has dropped below 18VAC. This low-voltage circuit powers the control board and iComfort thermostat communication. If the voltage remains below 18VAC for 10 minutes, the iComfort thermostat will shut the air-handler off. The fault clears automatically when voltage exceeds 20VAC for 2 seconds, or after a manual power reset.

The system is designed to shut itself off after 10 minutes of low secondary voltage, which limits most risk to the equipment. Operating with chronically low control voltage can cause erratic behavior and may stress the control board or transformer over time. It is best to address the fault promptly rather than continuing to reset the system repeatedly.

A power reset will clear the 401 fault code, but it will not fix the underlying cause. If the secondary voltage is still below 18VAC after the reset, the fault will return and the 10-minute shutdown timer will start again. A power reset is useful for confirming whether the fault was a temporary voltage fluctuation, but recurring codes require proper diagnosis of the transformer, wiring, and connected accessories.

Some causes, such as checking for overloaded accessories on the 24VAC bus or inspecting visible wiring for damage, can be assessed by a knowledgeable DIYer. However, measuring transformer output voltage and line voltage safely requires electrical knowledge and a multimeter. Replacing a control transformer or diagnosing a control board fault is best left to a qualified HVAC technician.

Repair costs depend entirely on the root cause. A simple wiring correction or terminal reseat might cost only a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. A control transformer replacement generally runs $100 to $300 in parts and labor. If the control board is at fault, costs can range from $300 to $700 or more depending on the board and labor rates in your area.
