CH38 is an alternate code for CH36 and signals that the LG air conditioner's refrigerant leakage detection system has identified a potential loss of refrigerant. The system monitors pressure and temperature conditions across the refrigerant circuit and triggers this code when readings fall outside normal parameters. The unit will typically shut down to prevent compressor damage until the issue is resolved.

Modern residential refrigerants are generally low in toxicity, but a significant leak in an enclosed space can displace oxygen and pose a risk in high concentrations. Running the system with a low refrigerant charge can also permanently damage the compressor. It is best to turn the unit off and contact a technician promptly rather than continuing to operate it with this fault active.
