LG Dishwasher Error Code HC1

HC1 signals a heater malfunction on LG dishwashers running software version 7134 or later. The control board detected that water temperature increased by 2 degrees Fahrenheit or less over a 20-minute heating period, indicating the heater is not working properly. After a failed retry, the board shuts the heater off and stores the HC1 code. Common causes include a loose heater connector, a burned-out heating element, or a faulty temperature sensor.

The dishwasher's control system shuts the heater off when HC1 occurs, which prevents overheating of the heater circuit. However, continuing to run the appliance will result in incomplete wash and dry cycles because water will not reach the required temperature. It is best to stop using the dishwasher and diagnose the fault before running additional cycles.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A heating element replacement typically runs between $80 and $200 including the part, while a thermistor is generally a lower-cost fix in the $30 to $80 range for the part alone. If the control board is at fault, parts and labor can range from $150 to $400 or more. Having the connector and wiring inspected first is worthwhile since that may resolve the issue at no parts cost.

Some causes of HC1, such as a loose or corroded heater connector, can be addressed without special tools by inspecting and reseating the connector. Testing the heating element and thermistor with a multimeter is also within reach for a knowledgeable DIYer. However, replacing a heating element or control board involves working inside the dishwasher tub and disconnecting electrical components, so comfort with appliance repair is recommended before proceeding.

A power reset may clear the code temporarily, and the dishwasher will attempt to operate again. However, if the underlying problem with the heater, wiring, or temperature sensor is not corrected, HC1 will return once the control board completes its 20-minute monitoring window and detects insufficient temperature rise again. A reset alone is not a fix.
