Start with a Power-On-Reset to rule out a transient fault. If E4 returns, inspect the lower compartment thermistor wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. If the wiring appears intact, the thermistor itself should be tested for correct resistance and replaced if it reads open or out of range. In rare cases where both the sensor and wiring check out, the control board may need evaluation.

If the repair is limited to reseating a connector or cleaning corroded pins, there may be little to no parts cost, though a service call fee will typically apply. Replacing the lower compartment thermistor sensor usually involves a parts cost in the range of $20 to $80 depending on the specific model, plus labor. If the control board is at fault, costs can range from $150 to $400 or more for parts and labor combined.

A Power-On-Reset, performed by unplugging the unit and plugging it back in, can clear the E4 code if the fault was caused by a temporary electrical glitch.
