What E12 means on a Maytag microwave
E12 on a Maytag microwave indicates the control board has detected a short circuit condition in the gas sensor circuit. The PCB assembly continuously monitors the gas sensor's electrical signal; when it reads a value outside the expected range due to a short, it throws E12 and halts normal operation. The fault can originate at the sensor itself, the wiring harness connecting the sensor to the board, or the PCB assembly if the short is internal to the board.
For homeowners, this error means the microwave's built-in gas sensor has an electrical problem. This sensor monitors gas levels in the cavity during cooking cycles. A 'short' means two points in the circuit are making unintended contact, sending an abnormal signal to the control board. The board then stops the appliance to prevent potentially unsafe operation. The most common starting points are a loose or disconnected sensor connector, damaged wiring, or a failed sensor or control board that needs replacement.

Common causes of E12
- 01
Disconnected or loose gas sensor connector
Wiring / connectionThe sensor connector may have vibrated loose from the PCB or sensor terminal, creating an open or short condition that the control board reads as E12. Reseating the connector fully resolves this without any parts replacement.
- 02
Damaged or shorted wiring harness to gas sensor
Part replacementWiring between the gas sensor and the PCB can chafe against the microwave chassis or get pinched during reassembly, causing insulation to wear through and wires to short against each other or ground. Visually inspect the full harness run for burnt, melted, or frayed sections.
- 03
Failed gas sensor
Part replacementThe gas sensor itself can develop an internal short, producing an out-of-range resistance or voltage signal that triggers E12. A multimeter check of the sensor's resistance against the specification in the service manual will confirm whether the sensor has failed.
- 04
Faulty PCB assembly
Part replacementIf the sensor and all wiring check out correctly, the PCB assembly may have a shorted component on the sensor input circuit. This is the least likely cause but should be evaluated after ruling out the sensor and harness.
