What F5 means on a Maytag microwave
The F5 error code on a Maytag microwave indicates a touch panel failure detected by the control board. The touch panel is the membrane switch assembly that registers button presses and sends signals to the control board. When the control board cannot read valid input signals from the touch panel, or detects a short or open circuit within the panel membrane, it throws F5 and locks out operation. This can occur spontaneously or after a power event.
For homeowners, the F5 code means the buttons on the front of your microwave have stopped communicating correctly with the microwave's brain. The touch panel is the flat surface with printed buttons that you press to set cook times and power levels. When this panel fails, the microwave cannot accept commands and will display F5 instead of operating normally. The panel itself is a sealed membrane layer that wears out over time, develops internal shorts, or loses contact with the ribbon cable that connects it to the control board.
In most cases, the touch panel must be replaced to clear this error. Occasionally the ribbon cable connecting the panel to the control board is the actual failure point, so inspecting that connection before ordering parts is worth doing. A full control board failure can also present as F5 if the board misreads panel signals, though this is less common.

Common causes of F5
- 01
Failed touch panel membrane
Part replacementThe membrane switch layer inside the touch panel develops internal shorts or open circuits over time from repeated use, moisture, or heat exposure. This causes the control board to detect invalid or no signals and trigger F5.
- 02
Damaged or disconnected ribbon cable
Wiring / connectionThe ribbon cable connecting the touch panel to the control board can become unseated, torn, or corroded, interrupting signal transmission. The control board reads this as a panel failure and displays F5.
- 03
Moisture or grease contamination in the touch panel
Part replacementSteam and grease from cooking can penetrate the touch panel membrane, causing false shorts or stuck keys that the control board interprets as a panel malfunction.
- 04
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the control board itself has a damaged input circuit, it may misinterpret or fail to read signals from an otherwise functional touch panel and display F5. This is less common but should be considered if a new touch panel does not clear the code.
