Error code 04 indicates that the refrigerator compartment fan motor (R-Fan) is not operating correctly. The control board monitors the motor by reading F and G feedback signals, and when those signals are missing or interrupted, the error is triggered. The root cause can be a failed motor, a wiring problem, or a contact failure in the signal circuit.

Continuing to use the refrigerator with error code 04 active is not recommended for extended periods. Without a functioning R-Fan, cold air will not circulate properly in the refrigerator compartment, leading to uneven or insufficient cooling. Perishable food is at risk of spoiling, and the compressor may work harder than normal trying to compensate.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code display, but it will not resolve the underlying problem. If the R-Fan motor is failing, the wiring is damaged, or a connector has poor contact, error code 04 will return once the refrigerator restarts and the control board again fails to detect the F and G feedback signals. The physical cause must be corrected before the error will stay cleared.

Some causes of error code 04 are DIY-accessible, such as reseating loose connectors, clearing ice buildup from the fan, or repairing a visibly broken wire. If the motor itself has failed, replacing the R-Fan motor is a moderate-difficulty repair that requires accessing the refrigerator compartment interior and disconnecting the wiring harness. If you are not comfortable working with appliance wiring, a technician should handle the repair.
