This fault code means the Trane furnace control board has detected that Temperature Sensor 1 is in a shorted condition, producing an abnormally low resistance signal. The board cannot use a shorted sensor reading to safely manage furnace operation, so it logs the fault and may prevent normal heating cycles. The root cause is typically a failed thermistor, damaged wiring, or moisture in the sensor circuit.

It is not recommended to continue operating the furnace while this fault is active. Temperature Sensor 1 provides data the control board uses to manage heating sequences and safety functions, and a shorted sensor means the board is receiving unreliable or no usable temperature information. Operating the system under these conditions could lead to improper control behavior. Have the fault diagnosed and repaired before resuming normal furnace use.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. If only the temperature sensor needs replacement, parts and labor combined typically range from around $100 to $300. Resetting the furnace by cycling power may temporarily clear the fault code from the display, but the fault will return if the underlying cause has not been corrected. If the sensor is physically shorted or the wiring is damaged, the control board will detect the abnormal resistance signal again as soon as it runs its sensor checks. A reset alone is not a repair and should only be used as part of the diagnostic process.
