E4 means the appliance detected an open lid condition at the start of the spin phase during a rinse and spin cycle. The machine requires the lid switch circuit to be closed before it will allow the basket to spin. The error can appear because the lid was actually open, or because the lid switch or its wiring has failed and is not sending a closed signal to the control board.

You should not attempt to bypass or ignore the E4 error. The lid switch is a safety mechanism that prevents the spin basket from operating at high speed with the lid open, which could cause injury. The machine is designed to stop the cycle until a valid closed-lid signal is confirmed, and continued use without resolving the underlying cause is not recommended.

A reset may temporarily clear the E4 code, but if the lid switch circuit is still open when the machine attempts to spin again, the error will return immediately. Resetting the machine does not fix the underlying hardware problem. The error will only stay resolved once the lid is confirmed closed and the lid switch, strike, and wiring are functioning correctly.

Start by closing the lid completely and restarting the cycle to rule out a simple open-lid situation. If the error returns, perform a lid switch test by checking continuity across the switch with a multimeter while pressing the actuator down. If the switch shows no continuity when the lid is closed, replace the switch. Also inspect the lid strike for cracks or breakage, and check the wiring harness for loose or damaged connections.

If the issue is simply a lid left open, there is no cost. A replacement lid switch typically costs in the range of $10 to $40 for the part itself, depending on the model. A replacement lid strike is generally less expensive, often in the $5 to $20 range.
