SL stands for suds lock. It means the washer detected an excessive suds buildup and attempted to clear it automatically up to three times without success. The control board halts the cycle and displays SL to alert you that intervention is needed before washing can resume. Common triggers include too much detergent, a non-HE detergent in an HE machine, or a drain pump that is struggling to evacuate the foamy water.

You should not attempt to force the washer through a cycle while the SL code is active. The suds buildup can put extra strain on the pump motor and may cause water to back up into areas not designed to handle it. Press STOP/CANCEL, let the suds settle, and address the root cause before running another load. Repeated SL faults without correction can accelerate wear on the drain pump.

If the cause is simply too much or the wrong type of detergent, the fix costs nothing beyond switching to a properly dosed HE detergent. Clearing a blocked drain hose or pump filter is generally a no-cost or low-cost repair that most technicians can handle quickly.

If the error returns on subsequent loads, reduce the amount of detergent you use, switch to an HE-certified formula, and inspect the drain pump filter and hose for obstructions. Persistent SL errors after correcting detergent use point toward a mechanical issue with the pump.

Pressing STOP/CANCEL will clear the SL code from the display, but it does not resolve the underlying suds condition. If you restart the cycle before the suds have fully dissipated or before the detergent issue is corrected, the washer will detect the same problem again and the code will return. A reset is the right first step, but it needs to be followed by actual correction of the cause.
