Carrier Furnace Error Code 14

Code 14 means the furnace entered ignition lockout after failing to light the burner and confirm a stable flame across four consecutive attempts. The control board shuts down operation to prevent unburned gas buildup. It will automatically try to reset after three hours. If the root cause is not repaired, the lockout will repeat.

You can reset the furnace by turning off the power switch or the thermostat and waiting a few minutes before restoring power, which may clear the lockout sooner than the three-hour auto-reset. However, this only restarts the ignition attempts. If the underlying fault persists, the lockout will occur again within the same heating cycle.

Repair costs depend heavily on the failed component. Cleaning the flame sensor is a low-cost service call repair, often in the range of $80 to $150 including labor. Replacing a hot surface igniter typically runs $150 to $300. A gas valve replacement is more involved and can range from $300 to $600 or more depending on the part and labor rates in your area.

The control board does auto-reset after three hours, so the furnace will attempt to light again on its own. However, if a component such as the flame sensor or igniter is actually faulty, the furnace will lock out again and display code 14. An auto-reset is not a repair, it is just a built-in retry delay.

The lockout itself is a safety feature, not a hazard. The control board stops trying to ignite specifically to avoid releasing unburned gas into the system. That said, if you smell gas near the furnace or in your home at any time, leave the building and contact your gas utility before doing anything else.
