Error code 22 on a Carrier furnace means the control board has detected an abnormal flame-proving signal, specifically a flame signal arriving while the gas valve is de-energized and should be fully closed. This is a safety-related fault because it suggests either gas is flowing when it should not be, or the flame sensor circuit is sending a false signal. The furnace responds by keeping the inducer fan running continuously to ventilate the system until the fault is resolved.

A power reset may temporarily clear the fault code, but it will return if the underlying problem is not corrected. If the gas valve is leaking or the flame sensor circuit has an electrical fault, those conditions will still be present after a reset and the furnace will detect the abnormal signal again. A reset alone is not a fix for this code.
