Error code 24 on a Carrier furnace means the secondary voltage fuse in the 24VAC control circuit has blown open. This low-voltage circuit connects the thermostat and control board, and a short somewhere in the wiring caused the fuse to open as a protective measure. The furnace will not operate normally until the short is located, corrected, and the fuse is replaced.

Start by disconnecting the thermostat leads at the furnace control board, then replace the blown 24VAC fuse with one of the correct amperage rating. Restore power and check whether the new fuse holds. If it does, the short is in the thermostat wiring or thermostat, and you can trace the wire run for damage or test the thermostat. If the fuse blows again with thermostat leads disconnected, the short is inside the furnace and may involve accessory wiring or the control board itself.

Repair costs depend entirely on the root cause. If the issue is a simple wiring problem or a faulty thermostat, costs are generally in the range of $75 to $250 including a service call. If the control board has failed and requires replacement, costs can range from $300 to $650 or more depending on the board and labor rates in your area.

Resetting the furnace will not clear error code 24 if the blown fuse is not replaced and the underlying short circuit is not corrected. If you simply replace the fuse without finding the cause, the new fuse will likely blow again immediately when power is restored. The short circuit must be identified and repaired first.

The blown fuse itself is a safety feature, not a hazard. It opened specifically to prevent damage from an overcurrent condition in the low-voltage circuit.
