Error code 34 on a Carrier furnace means the control board attempted ignition but did not receive confirmation from the flame sensor that a flame was established. The board requires a minimum of 0.5 microamps DC from the flame sensor to prove ignition. If this signal is not detected, the board retries the ignition sequence 3 more times before triggering lockout code 14. The most common causes are a dirty flame sensor, low gas pressure, or a failing hot surface igniter.

Error code 34 is a safety shutdown, meaning the furnace has already stopped operating on its own. The control board prevents the unit from continuing to run without confirmed ignition, so unburned gas is not being released into your home during a lockout. You should not attempt to bypass or override the lockout. Diagnosing and correcting the underlying ignition issue before resetting is the correct approach.

Repair costs vary depending on which component is at fault. Cleaning the flame sensor yourself costs nothing beyond a few minutes of time, while a professional diagnostic visit typically runs in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing a hot surface igniter generally costs between $100 and $250 including parts and labor. Gas valve replacement is more involved and can range from $300 to $600 or more depending on parts availability and local labor rates.

Start by cleaning the flame sensor rod with fine steel wool to remove oxide buildup, then verify the flame sense microamp reading is between 4.0 and 6.0 microamps DC. Check that the manual gas shutoff valve is fully open and that the green/yellow ground wire is securely connected to the furnace sheet metal. If the igniter appears cracked or does not glow fully during ignition, it will need to be replaced. If gas pressure or the gas valve is suspected, a licensed technician should perform those checks.

A manual reset will clear the lockout and allow the furnace to attempt ignition again, but it will not fix the underlying problem. If the root cause is not corrected, the furnace will go through the same sequence of failed ignition attempts and return to lockout. Repeated lockouts without repair can stress igniter and gas valve components over time, so the fault should be diagnosed before simply resetting the unit.
