Error code 26 on a Carrier HVAC system means the control board has detected an invalid heater size. The heater identifier resistor (IDR) value being read does not match a valid configuration for the combination of indoor and outdoor components installed. The system uses the IDR resistance value to confirm heater compatibility, and a reading above 5000 ohms or outside the expected range will trigger this fault.

The fault is designed to prevent the system from operating with an unverified or mismatched heater configuration, which is a protective measure against potential electrical issues. While the error itself is a compatibility check rather than an immediate danger, running electric heat with an improperly identified or mismatched heater kit could pose risks. It is best to have the system inspected and corrected before continuing normal operation.
