It uses an optical or infrared emitter and receiver pair to detect how much soil and particulate matter is suspended in the wash water, allowing the dishwasher to adjust cycle intensity and duration accordingly. When the sensor cannot establish a reliable baseline reading during its calibration phase, the control board logs this fault and may interrupt or alter the wash cycle.
