The E2 code means the dishwasher's drain cycle exceeded the expected time limit without fully draining the water. The control board monitors drain duration, and when the pump runs too long without success, it triggers this fault. It is typically caused by a blocked filter, a restricted drain hose, or an incorrectly routed drain hose that is positioned too high.

A reset may clear the E2 code temporarily, but if the underlying drainage issue has not been resolved, the error will return during the next drain cycle. Resetting is useful for confirming that a repair worked, but it is not a fix on its own. Address the physical cause first, then reset the machine to verify the fault does not reappear.

If the cause is a clogged filter or misrouted hose, the repair costs nothing beyond your time. If a service technician is needed to clear a blockage or inspect the pump, expect to pay somewhere in the range of $80 to $150 for a service call. A drain pump motor replacement, including parts and labor, typically falls in the range of $150 to $300 depending on your location and the technician's rates.

Start by checking that the drain hose is not kinked, routed too high, or connected to a clogged disposal or drain. Next, remove and clean the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub. If both checks pass, inspect the drain pump impeller for debris. If the pump motor itself is faulty, it will need to be replaced to clear the fault permanently.

It is not recommended to continue running cycles with an active E2 error. If water is not draining properly, it can overflow into the tub, remain standing inside the dishwasher, or cause the drain pump to run dry and overheat.
