What CLn means on a Electrolux oven

The CLn code on an Electrolux oven is an informational status indicator, not a fault or error code. It appears on the display during an active self-clean cycle to communicate two things simultaneously: the self-clean process is running, and the door lock mechanism is engaged. The oven control board activates this display state automatically once the cavity temperature rises to the point where the door latch motor engages and confirms a locked position. This is normal, expected behavior built into the appliance's safety logic.

During a self-clean cycle, the oven cavity reaches extremely high temperatures, typically in the range of 800 to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, to incinerate food residue and grease into ash. At these temperatures, the door lock is a critical safety feature that physically prevents the door from being opened. The control board monitors the door lock switch to confirm engagement before allowing temperatures to climb to cleaning levels. The CLn indicator remains on the display for the entire duration of the cycle, which can last anywhere from 1.5 to 6 hours depending on the selected clean duration.

Once the cycle completes and the oven cools to a safe temperature, the control board signals the door latch motor to disengage, the door unlocks, and the CLn indicator clears from the display automatically. If the cycle needs to be stopped early, pressing CANCEL will interrupt the heating process, but the door will remain locked and CLn will continue to display until the cavity cools sufficiently for the latch to release safely.

Common causes of CLn

  1. 01

    Active self-clean cycle in progress

    Wiring / connection

The most common reason CLn appears is that a self-clean cycle was intentionally started. The display will show CLn for the entire duration of the cycle until the oven cools and the door unlocks.

  2. 02

Self-clean cycle still in cooldown phase

    Wiring / connection

After the heating portion of the cycle ends, the oven must cool to a safe temperature before the door unlocks. CLn will remain on the display during this cooldown period even though active heating has stopped.

  3. 03

Cycle was cancelled but oven is still hot

    Wiring / connection

If the CANCEL button was pressed to stop the cycle early, the door stays locked and CLn continues to display until the internal temperature drops to a safe level. This can take 30 to 90 minutes depending on how long the cycle ran.

  4. 04

Door latch motor did not disengage after cooling

    Part replacement

In rare cases, if the oven has cooled completely but CLn persists and the door remains locked, the door latch motor or its switch may have failed. This would require inspection and likely replacement of the latch assembly.

  5. 05

Control board not releasing the latch signal

    Part replacement

If the door latch physically appears to be disengaged but the CLn code remains on the display, the control board may not be correctly reading the latch switch feedback. A control board fault of this type is uncommon but possible.

Frequently asked questions about CLn

What does CLn mean on a Electrolux oven?
CLn is a status display that appears during an active self-clean cycle to indicate that the cycle is running and the door is locked. It is not an error code and does not indicate a malfunction. The display will clear automatically once the cycle finishes and the oven cools to a temperature safe enough to unlock the door.
How do I clear the CLn code on my Electrolux oven?
The CLn indicator clears on its own once the self-clean cycle completes and the oven cools sufficiently for the door latch to disengage. If you want to stop the cycle early, press CANCEL on the control panel. The display will still show CLn and the door will remain locked until the oven cools to a safe temperature, after which the code will disappear and the door will unlock automatically.
Is it safe to leave my Electrolux oven unattended while CLn is showing?
Self-clean cycles are designed to operate with minimal supervision, but it is generally recommended to remain nearby during any high-heat appliance operation. Ensure the kitchen is ventilated, keep children and pets away from the oven, and do not attempt to force the door open while CLn is displayed. The locked door is a safety feature preventing access to the extremely hot interior.
Will resetting my Electrolux oven clear the CLn code?
Pressing CANCEL will interrupt the self-clean cycle, but the CLn code and the door lock will remain active until the oven cools down to a safe temperature. Cutting power to the oven at the breaker is not recommended while the cavity is hot, as the door lock mechanism requires a cool-down period regardless. The code will not clear instantly through any reset method while the oven interior is still at an elevated temperature.
How much does it cost to repair an Electrolux oven that stays locked after a self-clean cycle?
If the oven door remains locked and CLn persists after the oven has fully cooled, the likely cause is a failed door latch assembly or a control board issue. Replacement door latch assemblies for Electrolux ovens typically cost between 30 and 80 dollars for the part, while control board replacements can range from 150 to 350 dollars or more. Adding professional labor, total repair costs can range from 100 to 500 dollars depending on the specific component involved and your location.
