Error code 1 on a GE dryer is a Lock Monitor fault, indicating that the lid lock mechanism either failed to engage or that the control board did not receive confirmation of the lock signal. The lid lock assembly is a safety-critical component that the control board monitors through a closed-circuit signal. When the dryer initiates a cycle, the control expects to see a confirmation signal indicating the lid is locked. If that signal is absent or interrupted, the board throws error code 1 and halts operation to prevent the drum from spinning with an unsecured lid.

The two primary failure points for this error are the lid lock assembly itself and the wiring harness that connects it to the control board. A faulty lock assembly may have an open internal circuit, which can be confirmed by checking its resistance with a multimeter. An open reading or a reading outside the expected range indicates a failed lock assembly. If the assembly checks out, the harness between the board and the lock assembly should be inspected for broken wires, corroded terminals, or disconnected connectors, any of which would interrupt the signal the board needs to see.

If both the lid lock assembly and the harness test within acceptable parameters, the lock assembly should still be replaced as the next diagnostic step, since intermittent mechanical failures in the lock mechanism can produce this code without showing an obvious electrical fault. This error will prevent the dryer from running, as the control board is designed to enforce lid lock confirmation before allowing drum rotation.
