What 003 means on a GE dryer
Error code 003 on a GE dryer indicates an Inlet Thermistor Open fault. The inlet thermistor is a temperature-sensing resistor located at the air inlet of the dryer, responsible for monitoring incoming air temperature and feeding that data to the control board. When the control board detects that the thermistor's high-reading count exceeds a threshold of 10, it sets this error, signaling that the sensor is behaving outside of normal operating parameters. An "open" condition in a thermistor typically means the circuit has broken, producing resistance readings that are effectively infinite or far outside the expected range.
The inlet thermistor works in tandem with the control board to regulate heat output and protect internal components from thermal damage. When this sensor fails or its circuit opens, the control board loses accurate temperature feedback from the inlet airflow path. Rather than risk operating blind on temperature, the board logs the error after the tenth consecutive out-of-range reading, providing a degree of fault tolerance before shutting down or alerting the user.
Common causes include a physically failed thermistor where the internal sensing element has broken, loose or corroded wiring connections at the thermistor harness, or a damaged wiring harness between the thermistor and the control board. In some cases, extreme lint buildup around the sensor can contribute to abnormal readings. The first diagnostic step is to inspect the thermistor and its wiring, test the sensor for continuity and proper resistance, and replace the thermistor if it is found to be open or out of specification.

Common causes of 003
- 01
Failed Inlet Thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor's internal sensing element has broken open, producing no usable resistance signal. This is the most common cause and is confirmed by testing the thermistor for continuity: an open reading with no continuity indicates the component needs replacement.
- 02
Loose or Disconnected Wiring Connector
Wiring / connectionThe connector at the thermistor plug can vibrate loose over time, breaking the circuit and mimicking a failed sensor. Inspect the harness connector at the thermistor and wiggle-test all terminals to check for intermittent contact.
- 03
Corroded or Damaged Terminals
Wiring / connectionMoisture or heat exposure can corrode the terminals in the thermistor harness connector, increasing resistance to the point of an open circuit. Visually inspect the terminals for discoloration, pitting, or oxidation and clean or replace as needed.
- 04
Damaged Wiring Harness
Part replacementThe wiring between the inlet thermistor and the control board can be pinched, burned, or broken, particularly near routing clips or heat sources. A continuity check along the full harness length will identify any open segments.
- 05
Excessive Lint Buildup Around Sensor
Wiring / connectionHeavy lint accumulation around the inlet thermistor can insulate it from accurate airflow readings, potentially contributing to abnormal high-reading counts over time. Clear any lint from the sensor area and surrounding ductwork during the inspection.
