GE Dryer Error Code 3
Locked Rotor Monitor
Locked Rotor Monitor - For 5 straight seconds control not seeing signal changes indicating the motor is turning while trying to spin. Could mean the motor isn't rotating or Control didn't get the signal because of lack of connection.
First step from the service manual
Physically check the washer for anything preventing motor movement. Check harness and harness connectors from the control to the motor. Verify hall sensor is connected to the main harness. Put washer in Service Mode and run TEST 13 Spin Test.
The complete diagnostic procedure includes additional test steps, resistance specifications, wiring diagram references, and component test points.

What 3 means on a GE dryer
Error code 3 on a GE dryer indicates a Locked Rotor Monitor fault. The control board monitors a signal from the motor that changes continuously as the motor spins. If the control does not detect any signal changes for 5 consecutive seconds while commanding the motor to run, it triggers this fault. This means the control board has determined that the motor either is not rotating at all or that the feedback signal is not reaching the board.
The motor feedback system typically relies on a hall sensor, which generates a pulsing signal as the motor shaft turns. The control uses this pulse stream to confirm rotation is occurring. If the hall sensor loses its connection to the main harness, the control receives no signal and interprets this as a locked or stalled rotor condition, even if the motor itself is physically spinning. A wiring fault, a damaged connector, or a failed hall sensor can all produce code 3 without the motor actually being seized.
A true mechanical lock condition is also possible. Foreign objects, a seized bearing, a failed motor start winding, or a stuck blower wheel can physically prevent motor rotation. In these cases, the motor may hum but fail to spin, and the rotor lock protection activates. Diagnosis begins with a physical inspection for obstructions, followed by continuity checks on the harness and connectors between the control and the motor, and confirmation that the hall sensor is seated and connected. Service Mode TEST 13 Spin Test is used to isolate whether the motor can operate under controlled conditions.

Common causes of 3
- 01
Hall Sensor Disconnected or Faulty
Part replacementThe hall sensor provides the control board with a continuous signal confirming motor rotation. A loose connection or failed sensor means the board sees no signal and triggers code 3 even if the motor is running. Check that the hall sensor is firmly connected to the main harness.
- 02
Broken or Loose Wiring Harness
Wiring / connectionA damaged, corroded, or disconnected connector anywhere along the harness between the control board and the motor can interrupt the rotation signal. Visually inspect all connectors and check continuity along the harness.
- 03
Mechanical Obstruction Preventing Motor Rotation
Wiring / connectionForeign objects, clothing, or debris caught in the blower wheel or drum can physically lock the motor. Manually rotate the drum and blower wheel to check for resistance or binding before any electrical diagnosis.
- 04
Failed Drive Motor
Part replacementIf the motor windings have failed or the motor bearings are seized, the motor will not spin when energized. A humming sound with no rotation is a common symptom. Confirm through Service Mode TEST 13 Spin Test to isolate the motor.
- 05
Control Board Fault
Part replacementIf the harness, connectors, hall sensor, and motor all check out correctly, the control board itself may have failed and is either not sending the run command or not reading the feedback signal properly.
