GE Dryer Error Code 10

Error code 10 on a GE dryer signals a Mode Shift Feedback Monitor fault. The control board commanded the mode shifter to change positions, but the feedback it received back does not match the requested state. This condition is confirmed when the basket or agitator is also spinning faster than 45 RPM. The dryer stops operation to prevent mechanical damage.

It is not recommended to continue running the dryer while error code 10 is active. The fault indicates a mechanical drive component is not operating in the correct state, and the drum may not be functioning as intended. Continued use could cause additional wear or damage to related drive system components. Resolve the underlying issue before resuming normal operation.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but it will return if the underlying mechanical or wiring fault has not been corrected. The control board will detect the mismatch between commanded and actual mode shifter position again as soon as conditions trigger the check. A reset alone is not a repair and should not substitute for proper diagnosis of the mode shifter system.

A technically inclined DIYer can perform several of the diagnostic steps involved. Checking the mode shifter coupler for binding and testing harness continuity require only basic tools and a multimeter. Testing the mode shifter motor resistance at approximately 5.7K ohms is also straightforward. Replacing the mode shifter assembly or wiring harness is moderately involved but manageable with the right parts and disassembly knowledge.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. If the issue is only a loose or disconnected wiring harness, the cost may be minimal, primarily involving labor. A replacement mode shifter assembly typically ranges in parts cost from around $50 to $150 or more depending on the model. Adding professional labor charges, total repair costs commonly fall between $100 and $300.
