Error code 008 on a GE dryer means the control board detected that the door signal in the hardware door switch detection circuit never registered an open state across five consecutive cycles. The board interprets this as the door latch being stuck closed. The fault can be caused by a failed door switch, a wiring harness problem, a faulty control board, or a software protection event.

A power reset may temporarily clear the code, but if a hardware fault is present in the door switch or wiring harness, the error will return after five more cycles without a proper door open signal. If the error clears simply by opening the door during an active session, it may have been a one-time software protection event and no reset beyond that is needed.

If the issue is only a software protection trigger that clears when the door is opened, there is no parts cost. A replacement door switch typically costs in the range of $15 to $50 for the part alone. A new control board is considerably more expensive, generally ranging from $100 to $300 or more depending on the model. Professional labor costs will add to any parts expense.

Start by opening the dryer door and checking whether the error clears. If it does, the issue was a software protection trigger and no parts may be needed. If the error remains with the door open, inspect the door switch for damage and test it for proper continuity, then check the wiring harness for broken wires or corroded connectors. If both check out, the control board may need to be replaced.

Operating the dryer with an unresolved door switch fault is not recommended. The door switch is part of the safety circuit that ensures the drum does not spin while the door is open. A faulty switch could prevent the dryer from stopping when the door is opened, which presents a safety risk. Diagnose and resolve the fault before continuing regular use.
