What PF means on a GE dryer
The PF error code on a GE dryer stands for Power Failure. It is a notification code, not a fault code, meaning it does not indicate a component malfunction. Instead, it records that the dryer lost incoming AC power while a cycle was actively running. The dryer's control board monitors power continuity during operation, and when power is interrupted and then restored, the board displays PF to alert the user that the cycle did not complete normally.
The most common trigger is a brief household power interruption, such as a momentary utility outage, a tripped circuit breaker, or a loose connection at the outlet or terminal block. Because most dryers require a dedicated 240-volt circuit (for electric models) or a dedicated 120-volt circuit (for gas models), any disruption to that circuit during operation will generate this code. Voltage sags or brownouts can also trigger PF if the drop is severe enough for the control board to register a loss of power.
The code itself does not damage the dryer or indicate a failing component. When PF appears, the cycle has been paused at whatever point the interruption occurred. Pressing Start will resume the cycle from that point, while pressing Pause/Cancel will clear the display entirely. If PF appears repeatedly without an obvious power outage, the circuit, outlet, and power cord connections should be inspected for intermittent faults.

Common causes of PF
- 01
Household power outage
Wiring / connectionA utility interruption, even a very brief one, will cut power to the dryer mid-cycle and trigger the PF code when power is restored. Check if other appliances or clocks in the home were also affected.
- 02
Tripped circuit breaker
Wiring / connectionElectric dryers run on a double-pole 240-volt breaker that can trip due to an overload or a weak breaker. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker and reset it if needed.
- 03
Loose or faulty wall outlet connection
Part replacementA loose dryer power cord connection at the wall outlet can cause intermittent power loss during operation. Inspect the outlet for signs of arcing, heat discoloration, or a poor cord fit.
- 04
Loose terminal block connection
Wiring / connectionThe power cord connects to a terminal block inside the dryer cabinet, and loose wiring at that point can cause momentary power loss under load. This connection should be inspected and tightened by a qualified technician.
- 05
Voltage sag or brownout
Wiring / connectionA significant drop in supply voltage, often caused by high demand on the local grid or a failing utility transformer, can register as a power failure on the control board. If PF appears repeatedly during peak hours, contact your utility provider.
