GE Dryer Error Code 22
Out of Balance (OOB) during Dry Load Sense
Out of Balance (OOB) during Dry Load Sense - Large wet/OOB load being washed. OOB condition detected during dry load sense algorithm. Dry load sense will be abandoned and wet load sense will be started.

What 22 means on a GE dryer
Error code 22 on a GE dryer indicates an Out of Balance (OOB) condition detected during the dry load sense phase of the cycle. The dry load sense algorithm is a process the dryer uses to evaluate the load before committing to a full drying cycle. When the control detects that the drum load is unevenly distributed or excessively large during this sensing phase, it triggers code 22 and abandons the dry load sense routine entirely. The system then automatically transitions to a wet load sense algorithm to better accommodate the condition.
The detection logic relies on the drum's rotational behavior and motor feedback during the sensing phase. A load that is heavily clumped to one side, or a single large bulky item like a comforter or heavy blanket, creates an imbalance that the control registers as outside acceptable parameters. This is a protective and adaptive response, not a hard fault, meaning the dryer is not necessarily malfunctioning but is instead flagging a loading condition that interferes with its normal sensing routine.
Beyond load distribution, the basket itself can contribute to persistent OOB detections. If the drum has developed excessive friction at its bearing or glide points, or if the drum has become physically out of round due to wear or damage, the imbalance signal can be triggered even with a properly loaded drum. In these cases, the mechanical condition of the basket must be inspected directly to rule out a hardware cause rather than a user loading issue.

Common causes of 22
- 01
Uneven load distribution
Wiring / connectionLaundry clumped to one side of the drum during startup triggers the OOB detection. Opening the dryer and manually redistributing the items evenly around the drum is the first corrective step.
- 02
Large or bulky single items
Wiring / connectionOversized items like comforters, sleeping bags, or heavy blankets tend to bunch and shift, creating a severe imbalance that the dry load sense algorithm flags as OOB. Running bulky items with a few smaller items can help balance the load.
- 03
Overloaded drum
Wiring / connectionA drum packed too full restricts tumbling, causing the load to behave as a single unbalanced mass. Reducing the load size so items can tumble freely will allow the sensing algorithm to function correctly.
- 04
Drum with excessive friction at bearing or glide points
Part replacementWorn drum glides, a failing rear bearing, or friction buildup can cause abnormal drum behavior that mimics an OOB condition even with a properly distributed load. Inspect the basket for resistance when spinning by hand.
- 05
Drum out of round
Part replacementPhysical deformation of the drum can cause consistent OOB signals regardless of how the load is distributed. Visually inspect the drum for warping or uneven gaps at the front seal, and check for wobble during rotation.
