GE Dryer Error Code 22

Code 22 means the dryer detected an out of balance condition during its dry load sense phase. The dry load sense algorithm monitors the drum at the start of a cycle to evaluate the load, and when it finds the load is too uneven or too large, it logs code 22. The dryer then abandons the dry load sense routine and switches to wet load sense mode automatically. In most cases this points to a load distribution issue rather than a mechanical failure.

Code 22 is not a safety shutoff and the dryer will continue operating by switching to wet load sense mode. However, running the dryer repeatedly with a heavily imbalanced load can contribute to wear on drum support components over time. Addressing the load distribution issue promptly is the best course of action.

If the cause is simply a load distribution problem, there is no repair cost involved. If the code is caused by worn drum glides, a damaged bearing, or an out of round drum, parts and labor costs can vary widely depending on the specific components needed and local labor rates, generally ranging from around 75 dollars to several hundred dollars for a professional repair. Drum glides and bearings are typically the less expensive end of that range.

Start by opening the dryer and redistributing the load evenly around the drum, making sure no items are clumped together or tangled. If the load is very large, remove some items and run a smaller load. If the code continues with a properly distributed and reasonably sized load, inspect the drum for rough rotation, worn glides, or physical damage that may be causing persistent OOB detection.

Resetting the dryer by unplugging it or cycling the power may clear the displayed code temporarily, but the code will return if the underlying condition is not corrected. If the cause is an uneven load, redistributing the laundry before restarting will resolve it. If the cause is a worn drum component, the code will likely recur until the mechanical issue is repaired.
