What E02 means on a GE dryer
The E02 error code on a GE dryer indicates a short condition in the outlet thermistor circuit. The outlet thermistor is a temperature-sensing resistor positioned at the exhaust outlet of the dryer drum, responsible for monitoring the air temperature as it exits the drum. When this thermistor shorts, its signal voltage drops to an abnormally low level. Specifically, the control board registers this fault when the thermistor output voltage falls below the 0.2V minimum threshold and remains there continuously for 5 minutes. A shorted thermistor reads as an artificially low resistance, which translates to a voltage signal the control board interprets as an extreme temperature condition.
The outlet thermistor is part of the dryer's thermal management system. It works alongside the control board to regulate heating cycles and prevent overheating. When the thermistor signal is shorted, the board can no longer trust the temperature readings, so it triggers E02 to alert the technician and halt normal operation. This protects both the appliance and the surrounding area from potential heat-related damage.
Diagnosing E02 begins with inspecting the thermistor's resistance value using a multimeter, then tracing the wiring harness and connectors between the thermistor and the control board. A shorted thermistor will typically measure near zero ohms rather than the expected resistance range for the operating temperature. Damaged wiring insulation that allows two conductors to contact each other, or a corroded or pinched connector, can also create the short condition without the thermistor itself being faulty. If wiring and connectors check out, the thermistor should be replaced.

Common causes of E02
- 01
Failed outlet thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself has shorted internally, causing its resistance to drop near zero ohms. Testing with a multimeter will show near-zero resistance rather than the expected value for the current temperature.
- 02
Damaged wiring insulation
Part replacementHeat, pinching, or rodent damage can wear through the insulation on the thermistor leads, allowing the two wires to contact each other and create a short. Visually inspect the full length of the wiring harness from the thermistor to the control board connection point.
- 03
Corroded or damaged connector
Wiring / connectionThe connector joining the thermistor wiring to the harness can corrode, arc, or collapse in a way that shorts the terminals together. Inspect the connector body and pins closely for discoloration, melting, or moisture damage.
- 04
Pinched wiring at cabinet seam
Wiring / connectionWiring routed near a panel edge or cabinet seam can be pinched during reassembly, eventually wearing through the insulation and causing a short. Check areas where the harness passes through or near sheet metal edges.
- 05
Control board fault
Part replacementIn rare cases, the control board's thermistor input circuit can develop an internal fault that mimics a shorted sensor signal. This should only be considered after the thermistor, wiring, and connectors have all been confirmed good.
