What CLg means on a GE dryer
The CLg error code on a GE dryer indicates that the control board has detected a duct or vent blockage condition. The dryer uses airflow and temperature sensors to monitor exhaust performance during operation. When the system determines that airflow is restricted beyond an acceptable threshold, it triggers the CLg alert. Importantly, the dryer will continue to run when this code appears, but the code may display intermittently and with increasing frequency as the vent restriction worsens over time.
The venting system is critical to safe and efficient dryer operation. Hot, moist air produced during the drying cycle must be expelled through the exhaust duct to the exterior of the home. When lint buildup, a crushed duct, a blocked exterior vent cap, or excessive duct length restricts this airflow, exhaust temperatures rise and drying times increase. The dryer's sensors detect these abnormal thermal and airflow conditions and flag the CLg code as a warning before the situation becomes a thermal safety event.
To formally assess the duct condition, GE provides a built-in duct condition test. To initiate it, press and hold both the DAMP ALERT and TEMP buttons simultaneously, then press the POWER pad while still holding the other two. This test mode allows the control system to evaluate airflow performance and give a more definitive result about the severity of the blockage. Clearing the CLg code requires resolving the underlying restriction, not simply resetting the appliance.

Common causes of CLg
- 01
Lint buildup in the exhaust duct
Wiring / connectionAccumulated lint inside the dryer duct is the most frequent cause of this code. Over time, lint coats the interior walls of the ductwork, narrowing the passage and restricting airflow. Disconnect the duct and inspect or use a vent cleaning brush kit to clear it.
- 02
Blocked exterior vent cap
Wiring / connectionThe vent cap on the outside of the home can become clogged with lint, debris, bird nests, or ice in cold climates. Check that the exterior flap opens freely and that the opening is unobstructed.
- 03
Crushed or kinked duct
Part replacementFlexible duct behind the dryer can become kinked or crushed if the unit is pushed too close to the wall. This physically restricts airflow even if no lint is present. Pull the dryer out and inspect the duct for any deformation.
- 04
Excessive duct length or too many bends
Part replacementDuct runs that are too long or include multiple 90-degree elbows create enough resistance to trigger the CLg code even without a blockage. Compare the installed duct length and configuration against the maximum allowed for your model.
- 05
Clogged lint screen or lint screen housing
Wiring / connectionA severely clogged lint screen or lint buildup in the screen housing slot can contribute to reduced airflow and may appear alongside a duct restriction. Clean the lint screen before every load and periodically clean the housing with a vacuum.
