What SE means on a GE dryer
The SE error code on a GE dryer indicates a moisture sensor fault detected during the diagnostic test cycle. The moisture sensor system uses two metallic electrode strips mounted inside the drum that measure the electrical conductivity of the tumbling clothes. As wet fabric contacts both electrodes simultaneously, a small current passes between them, and the control board uses that signal to estimate remaining moisture content. When the SE code appears, the control board has determined that the sensor circuit is returning a reading outside the expected parameters.
The diagnostic procedure directs technicians to Test 4, which focuses on evaluating both the moisture sensor electrode load and the harness connector. This means the fault could originate at the electrodes themselves, which can become coated with dryer sheet residue or lint buildup that insulates the metal surface and disrupts conductivity, or the problem could lie in the wiring harness connecting the sensor to the control board. A loose, corroded, or broken connector pin in that harness will interrupt the signal path and trigger the SE code just as readily as a failed sensor.
Because the SE code is specifically flagged during the diagnostic test rather than a normal cycle, it is most useful as a targeted service indicator. Technicians should inspect the electrode strips visually for coating or physical damage, verify harness continuity and connector seating, and confirm that the control board is receiving and interpreting the sensor signal correctly. Addressing the harness connector first is recommended since it is a non-destructive check that can rule out a wiring issue before condemning the sensor assembly itself.

Common causes of SE
- 01
Residue buildup on moisture sensor electrodes
Wiring / connectionDryer sheet chemicals and lint can coat the two metal electrode strips inside the drum, insulating them and preventing accurate conductivity readings. Visually inspect the strips for a waxy or filmy coating and clean them with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol.
- 02
Loose or disconnected harness connector
Wiring / connectionThe wiring harness connector linking the moisture sensor to the control board can loosen from vibration over time, breaking the signal path. Test 4 specifically calls for checking this connector, so inspect it for secure seating and any signs of spread or damaged pins.
- 03
Damaged or broken wiring harness
Part replacementWires in the sensor harness can fray, pinch, or break internally, especially near strain points along the drum housing. Check harness continuity with a multimeter and look for any visible chafing or heat damage along the wire run.
- 04
Failed moisture sensor electrode assembly
Part replacementThe electrode strips themselves can crack, corrode, or delaminate, making reliable conductivity measurement impossible. If the electrodes show physical damage and cleaning does not resolve the fault, the sensor assembly will need replacement.
- 05
Control board fault
Part replacementIf the electrodes and harness both test within acceptable parameters during Test 4 and the connector is secure, the control board may be failing to process the sensor signal correctly. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after all other components are ruled out.
